Nextdoor is disrupting the notion that high fences make good neighbors.
The mission of Nextdoor is to facilitate online neighbor-to-neighbor communications. To that end, the Company offers a free online platform that enables neighbors to create private social networks for their neighborhood. The most frequent posts are related to crime and safety issues, events, merchant advertising, and classified advertisements.
Among the features provided by Nextdoor include neighborhood maps and directories of residents. Recommendations of local service providers are automatically catalogued so that anyone can easily refer back to them at their convenience. Members can adjust the settings of the neighborhood news by selecting to receive emails about each new post, see everything in a single daily post, or turn off emails and check the website for new posts from neighbors.
Within the first two months of going live, Nextdoor has become home to over 580 neighborhoods (as defined by having at least ten users per neighborhood) in at least 41 states. Future robust growth is likely as Nextdoor makes it easy to form neighborhoods: neighbors can be invited by clicking an “Invite Neighbors” link on the website; invitations can be sent by email or Nextdoor will mail out postcard invitations at its expense.
